A healthy self-esteem means being able to see yourself positively; being able to openly accept your imperfections along with your positive characteristics. Unhealthy self-esteem means that a person views himself in a negative light.

Usually, we base our self-esteem on how we look when compared with other people. It may be intentional or unintentional, but all of us categorize people in our minds–we admire some and look down to some. And this very practice influences our self-esteem. If you are with a low self-esteem, your life is likely to be empty and despondent. You are likely to feel frustrated and useless oftentimes. Quite gloomy isn’t it? R-E-L-A-X – The Acronym To Keep in mind When Coping With Stress

Who reasonable person would not want to be able to cope with stress effectively? I don’t think anyone in this world wants to be consumed with stress all the time. No one likes feeling frazzled, bogged down and worn down. Nevertheless, in this modern society that we are living in, stress has become so common that it has somehow become a normal part of life. No matter what we do in life, we all face stressful situations on a daily basis and have our own share of stress.

Aside from the fact that stress makes us feel terrible, it also has also been shown to give rise to the development of various mental and physical illnesses. Stress is not completely negative, in fact, it can help push you to perform better. Nevertheless, being constantly exposed to stress can have detrimental effects to your mind and body. Sad to say, it is just not possible to completely avoid stress; what we can do is find ways to cope with it and lower its detrimental effects.

Let me share with you my personal anti-stress technique-the R-E-L-A-X method.

R- Recognize. Recognize that you are feeling consumed with stress. This is your first step towards managing stress effectively. If you don’t take this step, you will never be able to free yourself from the bonds of stress. Along with recognizing that you are stressed, you also have to recognize which things are actually causing you stress. This way, you will be able to find corresponding solutions or antidotes to each stressor.

E- Exercise. Exercise to deviate and release negative emotions. We all know that we need exercise to stay physically fit. Nevertheless, not a lot of people are aware of the fact that exercise also plays a crucial role in a person’s mental and emotional health. Exercise is powerful in relieving stress. To know what I am talking about, try exercising when you are feeling stressed.

L – Letting Go. Letting go of things that are out of your control. Too often, we are burned out by things that we have no control of or things that have passed already. For instance, the bad weather, the traffic jam or missed deadlines. If you take a look at the stressors in your life, you will see that many of them are pointless. Keep in mind that failure is a part of life and that things will not always happen according to your plan.

A – Attitude. Your attitude is a powerful sentiment. It influences every part of your life–self-image, relationships, business, and even your health. So having a negative attitude won’t do you any good. You should have a positive outlook towards challenges and failures. Always do your best in everything that you do but learn to accept that you also have limitations and weak spots. Know your weak spots and ask help from other people whenever necessary. A lot of people are highly stressed because they push themselves too much and look at seeking help from others as a sign of weakness or incapacity.

X- Xtra sleep. Sleep is a crucial part of everybody’s life. It is just as important as physical activity, nutrition and other vital activities in life. You should not take it for granted. Sleep renews and regenerates the body and mind. When you don’t get enough sleep, you are going to have little energy and will also have reduced mental acuity. So make sure you gain enough sleep each day.
