7 Steps On How To Improve Self Esteem

Self esteem is basically how we feel about ourselves. Our self esteem develops as we live everyday; it is not something that we innately have the moment we are born. Most people want to live a happy and successful life but this is often difficult to attain especially for people who suffer from low self-esteem. Good thing there are things we can do to better our self esteem.

However, you can’t change your self esteem right away, this would take a great deal of effort and time, in other words commitment. Here are seven steps on how to improve self esteem :

Step One

Assess your problems realistically. You have to have a realistic assessment of your problems so you can find the best solutions for them. For example, traffic and a bad hair day won’t become problems if you don’t assess them as such. Hassles, problems and obstacles will always be a part of life. So you need to learn to accept the fact that life is and will never be perfect. You will be able to react to day-to-day life events more effectively if your assessment of things are realistic.

Step Two

Do away with the comparison game. There will always be some people who have more than what you have and some who have less. If you keep on comparing, you will find yourself feeling inadequate very often.

Step Three

Determine which things actually trigger low self-esteem. Try to identify the areas in your life that are causing you to feel bad about yourself. Avoid them if you can, or better yet find ways to resolve these issues. For instance, if it is the way you look that is causing you to feel bad about yourself, take measures to improve it–go to the gym and dress well.

Step Four

Stop criticizing yourself. If you keep on criticizing and pulling yourself down, you will never develop a healthy level of self esteem. Instead, fill your head with positive affirmations. Positive statements and affirmations allow you to experience positive and motivating feelings. Whether speaking about how you look, your profession or your finances, avoid belittling yourself, or running yourself down. You should be your biggest fan!

Step Five

Be in the company of supportive and positive people. The people that surrounds us have a very important influence on how we feel about ourselves. Being with people who constantly make you feel inferior would do you no good. On the other hand, your self esteem is sure to improve if you are constantly in the company of people who encourage you all the time and accept you for who you are.

Step Six

Act! You won’t be able to develop a healthy level of self esteem if you don’t do anything about your self esteem problems. When you take action, regardless of the outcome, you will Feel Better About yourself. When you fail to move forward because of fear and anxiety, you’ll be discouraged and sad; and you will undoubtedly deal with a damaging blow to your self-esteem.

Step Seven

Don’t be hard on yourself when you do not accomplish exactly what you would like to. As humans we are bound to fall short sometimes. So instead of being resentful about the whole thing, readjust your goals or try harder next time. Almost any negative experience can be turned into a positive experience with the right attitude.
